Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Caretakers, have you ever wanted a way to get your little ones to help you pick up the house without slowing you down or getting in the way? As a parent, myself, and someone who used to run a nursery full of little ones; I came up with a few little games to help you all along the way. The is great for those who have children ages 2-7.
The Clean Up Games:
Make the basket- Game Number 1
Grab several trash bags or bins.Gather the kids together and say this.“We are going to play the clean up game. For every ‘Basket you make’ you will get a sticker/kiss/hug/minute on the computer or TV time”. The child with the most points at the end gets a big surprise from mommy (you decide the surprise) While you are playing the clean up game, sing songs or play kid music on the laptop/cd player. As they are making their baskets to win rewards you can be cleaning other things. Once their baskets are full, You look them over and say “Great job! Now we are going to play another part of the game.
Shuttle Sweep: Game Number 2
Shuttle Sweep, this is a two player game. Allow one child who can use the broom to maneuver it while mommy/daddy uses the dust pan. Have him/her shuttle the dust or dirt to you. The more he/she gets in the pan the better “score” he/she gets. While he/she is helping the shuttle sweep, the little ones can help too. When finished sweeping you move on to round 3/the next game. Make sure you add in your enthusiasm as you go through the “rounds/games”. The more you are excited about it, the more they will be too.
Wipe it down: Game Number 3
You give him or her, a small damp rag and show them how to wipe the table and sing “Here we go round the mulberry bush” ( make sure it is damp enough to clean something off but not too wet as to ruin your furniture. You can also add a touch of lavender oil to the rag to help with organic sanitizing or the room without it being harmful to your child.) Once the table or other furniture is wiped down, the person with the cleanest surface gets a small prize like a sicker or a pack of gummies. But make sure they know they cannot use it until the next game/round is completed.
Rocket pick up: Game Number 4
This is for picking up the toys in their room. There is an alien in the room he is lost and needs to find his way back to the shuttle; however with all the toys he cannot find it. (Act sad and pout as you tell them about the little alien) The toys need to launch out of the way and back to their homes so the little man can find his way home. Make zooming sounds and rocket blasting sound for them. This helps pick up time TREMENDOUSLY especially for little ones, I always did it with mine when they were smaller and you will be amazed how much you can get done while they are playing their pickup games. As you teach them the games and the rules; make a reward for following the rules (Mommy/ Daddy decides the prize) before you know it they want to play more pickup games this also makes them want you help more and more.
Pick up games/chores are fun and easy to do with your children. The teach responsibility and show that you have to work for somethings in life. We also used to include special prizes at the end of ours, like TV/Screen time when they were little, for the child who made it all the way through to the final round without giving up or loosing interest. You as the parent, figure out what prizes work best for you and your children.
I hope this helps lots of you, who are faced with being at home and working with your children in different ways than you are accustomed too.
As always if you would like to send me a comment or tell me your story I am looking forward to hearing from you, Until Next time <3 U.M.
